We first met in Washington's Union Station in the summer of 2009. Side note: This is Saul, and I'd like to clarify that we actually met for the first time on Facebook, before we met in person at Union Station. It was a few days before our birthright trip to Israel and Jenn, being the consummate planner that she is, contacted me to organize transportation logistics. She wanted to know how she would recognize me at Union Station. I told her I would be the man in the blue shirt carrying a single rose. Ok, not really. Just that I would look for her on the train. And I found her!
We spent the next ten days together in Israel. We ate falafel; hiked through the Golan Heights; ate some more falafel; slept in a Bedouin tent . . . with 45 other people; ran into House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer at a rest stop in the middle of the desert; and got to know each other... all while eating more falafel. We were bus buddies and hiking buddies, but weren't yet ready to take the big step . . . of riding a camel together.
Jenn left Saul after their trip, and decided that she'd rather tour around Europe "Eat. Pray. Love. style" than go back to D.C. But out of sight was not out of mind for Jenn. She remembers standing outside a Dubrovnik internet cafe talking to her Aunt on skype, telling her about this great guy she met on her trip to Israel. And about Saul. (Just kidding!) Meanwhile, Saul went to Wasilla, Alaska, in search of Sarah Palin and moose jerky. Unfortunately, he didn't find either, and came back to D.C. empty-handed.
After a few weeks of Island-jumping in Greece, sailing around Croatia, and eating Tzatziki, Jenn also returned to D.C. . . . and to Saul. We reconnected at a birthright reunion a few days later, and went on our first date the next night. We had a great time, even if Jenn did fall asleep in the middle of the date... only the first of many times Jenn would fall asleep sitting next to Saul in a movie theatre.
353 days, 2 seasons of the Amazing Race, and one house purchase later, on August 31, 2010, Saul proposed to Jenn . . . with Paddington's permission, of course! Jenn tried to spoil the proposal by inviting a friend to dinner that night and getting car sick on the ride home, but Saul persevered. He surprised Jenn with flowers and champagne at her apartment, and got on one knee to ask her that very important question. (Yes! That's what she said.) Just seconds after the proposal, Jenn started practicing for the wedding by breaking a newly-purchased champagne glass. Again, this was only the first of many times Jenn would do something klutzy.
Saul surprised Jenn by arranging for her mom to visit D.C. the day after the proposal, and we've pretty much been celebrating since! We have also moved into a home on Capitol Hill. We enjoy traveling around the world together, even if Saul sometimes takes the leader of the free world on his trips instead of Jenn. To this day, we have yet to ride a camel together. True story. (And, no Saul, that is not an invitation for you to surprise me with a camel at our wedding!) |
